The remains of the ancient Ephesus lie in the valley between the Mount Bulbul (Mt. Coressus) and Mount Panayir (Mt. Opion) to the south of the Selcuk Valley where the River Minor Menderes (Maeander) flows into the Aegean sea. The name of the city is "Aphasa" in the Etruscan/Luwian language, meaning "the City of Stream." This name later changed into Ephesus. That the history of the area dates as far back as the prehistoric ages is presumed from the archeological objects found during the excavations carried on theacropolis hill Ayasuluk/Seljuk.
