It lies on the level plain on the foothill of the volcanic mountain Erciyes at an altitude of 3916 m in Central Anatolia. The name of the city the Scythian/Khatti language is "Massakra" meaning "the place of the god at the summit". In fact, according to the belief held during theprehistoric era, the Chief god sits at the peak, whith and luminous at all times, of Mount Erciyes of which the ancient name was Arga/ak. The name of the city located in the ancient cappadocia later became Caesarea. According to the finds revealed by the excavations in Kultepe, Karahoyuk/Kanes, Massakra, Karum and Frakdin the settlement appears to have existed since the prehistoric times.
the city went through the same historical process as Cappadocia.
The foremost works of art in city are the castle today called the inner castle and restored during various periods, Ulucami with two domes and a wooden mimber built by Danisment faily in 1135, Honat HatunMosque and kulliye built in the name of Mahber-i Hatun in 1237, Sahabiye Medrese built by Sahip Ata in 1267 of which the portal is embellished with geometrical stone work and Giyasiye Hospital, the first medical school in Anatolia.
