Urgup / Nevsehir / Turkey

It is located 20 km to the east of Nevsehir city centrum. The name of the city in the Scythian/Khatti language is "Arakopea" meaning "Main Altar Place". In fact, the settlement consisting of dwellings hollowed out of the face of the steep rock cliff in the valley of the creeks Tomisos and Damsa was called Bas Hisar (Main Castle) during the Seljuk Turk era. The fairy Chimneys formed by the eroding rainwater and wind on the slopes of the valley in the area and the dwellings hewn into rocks produce a singular spectacle. Today it is in theservice of tourism with its touristic accommodation facilities, vineyards and wines. Located in the environs of Urgup is the Castle of Ortahisar in aquare from with white tuff and hundreds of rock-carved shelters visible on it.
